Silver Apple Nominations are Open

Don Bliss, class of 1950, established the Silver Apple Award in honor of his wife, Roxanne Waldhauser Bliss, class of 1951. During his career as a U. S. West Executive, Don would ask other executives who were the most influential people in their lives. Almost always a teacher would be one of the top influences. Most often, we have become adults before we realize the importance of a special teacher or staff member who has had a lasting influence on our lives. This endowed award was established to encourage students to appreciate educators or support staff who are especially important to them.

  1. Any South St. Paul District #6 student may make nominations for this award, individually, as a group or classroom. Students currently enrolled in grades PreK-12 are invited to nominate a currently employed favorite teacher or member of support staff (such as health assistant, food service, clerical, custodial/maintenance, etc.). The student(s) must legibly present in 100 words or less, “What quality does your favorite employee have that makes him or her so special?” The entry must be signed and mailed to: “Roxanne Bliss” Silver Apple Award, 521 Marie Avenue, South St. Paul, MN 55075 or given to a classroom teacher. Illegible, mutilated, reproduced, incomplete or duplicate entries will automatically be disqualified. Nominations will be divided into two groups: Pre-5, teacher and support staff and 6-12 teachers and support staff.
  2. The program will run from March 1-31, 2023. Entries must be received by April 1, 2023. No responsibility is assumed for lost, misdirected or late mail. Recipients will be selected at the sole discretion of an anonymous panel of judges selected by the South Saint Paul Educational Foundation. The judges’ decisions are final.
  3. The award recipients agree that the South St. Paul Educational Foundation may use names, likenesses, entry stories and additional information concerning the entrant and award recipient in any promotional activities relating to this program without further compensation to the recipients.
  4. Award recipients will receive a silver apple commemorating the award, as well as a cash award. Once an employee has received this award he/she is no longer eligible. No substitution for the prizes or any alterations will be permitted. All decisions are final.
