Students are Fighting Cancer Like Ninja Warriors
A group of students at Kaposia Education Center are remembering their friend by raising money for cancer research. 5th grade students are honoring their friend Jermier, who passed away from cancer, by dedicating a new Kaposia ninja warrior course to him. Jermier loved the Ninja Warrior unit in phy ed class, their idea to raise money, improve the course, and dedicate it to him has blossomed into something bigger. They are using the Ninja Warrior equipment to give back to cancer causes and help others fighting cancer.
This past fall, the students had an idea to fundraise for newer and more equipment for their school’s ninja warrior course. They had fundraisers, asked for donations from local businesses, and worked to raise more than $17,000 of their $30,000 goal. After purchasing what they call “phase one” equipment they decided to not stop there. They want to use the equipment to raise money for others battling cancer.
"Jermier was energetic, always happy and he put his friends first," said Kaposia 5th grader Marley, "He would be so happy we are doing this for him and others with cancer."
"This project has given students a chance to grieve a friend and turn that grief into an amazing way to remember Jermier and give back to the community," said Kaposia Teacher Brenda Johnson, “Fight Cancer Like a Ninja Warrior has given students choice, voice, ownership, engagement and they are motivated to pay it forward."
