Welcome New SSPPS American Indian Cultural Liaison
South St. Paul Public Schools is excited to introduce Niizhoogabaw Wahpepah (Niizh for short), our new American Indian Cultural Liaison. A passionate educator and advocate for Native language and culture, Niizh brings a wealth of experience, a deep cultural connection, and a commitment to supporting Native students and families in our district.
Niizh is no stranger to South St. Paul. “I used to live here,” he shared. “So I was happy to find out a position opened up in the school district where I can offer my services and take part in the educational experience here.” He says his return feels like coming home and with it comes a mission rooted in cultural preservation and education.
With a career rooted in Ojibwe language and education, Niizh’s journey began right after high school as an apprentice in Ojibwe language instruction at a Twin Cities high school. Recognized early on for his fluency and teaching ability, he has continued to share and expand his knowledge ever since. Over the years, Niizh has worked as an Academic Advisor for a college access program helping students from low-income and first-generation backgrounds, taught Ojibwemowin (the Ojibwe language) in summer programs and school settings, and helped inspire the next generation of Ojibwe language teachers, some of whom were once his students.
Now, he brings his talents and passion to SSPPS. “I’m excited to bring Ojibwemowin here and to weave culture and history into the program,” he said. One of his first initiatives will be an after-school sewing circle, where students can create traditional items like moccasins, ribbon shirts, and skirts. “The students will make and wear them themselves,” he added, highlighting the hands-on nature of his cultural teaching style.
Beyond language and sewing, Niizh hopes to foster a deeper understanding of Native experiences and the historical trauma tied to education. He says, “Our families were disrupted, and our culture was silenced. But today, through language revitalization and cultural reconnection, we are changing our path.” His goal is to support students while educating the wider community about the strength, resilience, and ongoing challenges of Native peoples.
Niizh is an avid disc golfer, deeply dedicated to his family, and loves spending time with his daughter, wife, and their dog, Sakura.
